In the spring of 1996, the Neopagan organization NROOGD (New Reformed Orthodox Order of the Golden Dawn) performed this fun Beltane celebration in a public park in Berkeley, California. View the photo album on Flickr.
Founded in 1967, NROOGD is not related to the well-known Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn that found popularity among 19th century British mystics. Rather, it began as a somewhat tongue-in-cheek historical study project by a group of San Francisco Bay Area scholars that eventually evolved into a full-fledged religious tradition. Today it offers a spiritual home to many NeoPagans and has earned its own place in the history of the modern Pagan Revival.
Although never a formal member of NROOGD, during the 1990’s I would often attend their public events, as it provided a warm and welcoming opportunity for “Solitary” Pagans like myself to meet, engage in fellowship, and join in honoring the ancient Gods of Earth and Sky that we hold in common.
